Tacit
The computer Linux never had. A free operating system with its own apps, typefaces and icons.
This is the whole desktop.
A notch at the top, a dock at the bottom, and your wallpaper in between. When something finishes, the notch says so in one line. The dock rises out of the edge of the screen. Every panel in Tacit does the same.
Its own apps
Pinax · Files
Your files, as pictures. Every file shows its picture, size and date. What you can do with it is listed beside it.
Viewer · Photos and video
The photo fills the window. The photos before and after it sit on either side.
Graphis · Code
Code in Tacit's own type. Graphis sets your code in Tacit Code and suggests names as you type.
Settings
Pick a wallpaper and the colours follow. Appearance sets the wallpaper, the colours, the type and how much of the wallpaper shows through your windows.
Thyris · Browser
Private by default. Thyris blocks ads and trackers before they load, and Google's AI features stay off. It runs on Chrome's engine, so sites work as they do in Chrome.
Apps · More than 1,300
Say what you want to do. Apps tells you what to use and gets it with one press. Your password is asked once.
Praxis · Your agent
Your agent, in its own app. Ask it to do something and close the window. It keeps working, and the top of the screen tells you when it's done.
Drawn for Tacit, down to the cursor.
The letters, the icons and the cursor on this page were all made for Tacit: Tacit Sans, Display, Condensed and Code, and Tacit's own symbols.
Find anything.
Type an app, a file, a setting or a calculation. Anything else goes to the web or to your agent.
One line, then it's gone.
When a download finishes or the battery is full, the top of the screen says so once and goes quiet.
Tacit 1.0 is free.
The code is open for anyone to read and change. Built on Arch Linux.
Questions
Is Tacit free? Yes, and its code is open. What happens to Windows? It stays: Setup shrinks Windows to make room and installs Tacit next to it, or next to another Linux with free space; holding Space at start chooses between them. With BitLocker on, Setup asks you to turn it off first. You can try Tacit from a USB stick first. Will it run on my computer? Tacit is made for laptops and desktops with Intel or AMD chips. Can I still use my apps? Apps has more than 1,300. Is it just Arch Linux? Underneath, yes; on top, everything is Tacit's own. Which AI agents work? Claude Code, Codex, opencode and pi, each with your own account; everything else works without one. What leaves my laptop? What you ask your agent goes to its maker; dictation goes to Google's Gemini; Thyris checks sites with Google Safe Browsing.
